More than 1,000 people were killed on Sunday when the entire population of the village of Tirsin in Sudan’s Jebel Marra was buried in massive landslides triggered by heavy rains.

The Civil Administration affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdel Wahid Mohamed al-Nur, said in a statement on Sunday:

“We are following with deep sorrow and concern the tragic events that struck the residents of Tirsin village, which was completely destroyed by massive landslides in central Jebel Marra, in the Jebel Amo district, on August 31, 2025, following the torrential rains that fell during the last week of August.”

According to the statement, preliminary reports indicate that nearly all the village’s residents—estimated at more than 1,000 people—lost their lives, with only one survivor found.

Tirsin, a well-known citrus-producing area in Jebel Marra, was entirely leveled by the mudslides and flooding.

The Civil Administration of the Sudan Liberation Movement appealed to the United Nations, regional and international organizations, and the “human conscience” to assist in recovering the bodies of more than 1,000 victims, including men, women, and children, who remain buried under the rubble.
