The United Nations Security Council is set to vote in September on a draft resolution to extend the international sanctions regime on Sudan, which is scheduled to expire on September 12, 2025.
The Council had previously extended the sanctions on Sudan on September 12 last year, continuing measures first imposed in 2005, for an additional year through September 2025.
At that time, the U.S.-sponsored draft resolution was unanimously adopted by all 15 members of the Security Council. The decision extended sanctions that include an arms embargo on the country, travel bans on certain individuals and entities, and asset freezes until September 12, 2025.
The Security Council first adopted Resolution 1591 on March 29, 2005, which established an arms embargo and sanctions targeting individuals and entities involved in the Darfur conflict.
