Humanitarian Aid Reaches South Kordofan for the First Time in 10 Months

The United Nations has announced the delivery of humanitarian aid to the towns of Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan, marking the first such assistance in nearly ten months.

UNICEF confirmed today that it has delivered life-saving supplies expected to benefit more than 120,000 vulnerable people in the two towns, after aid had been cut off for over nine months due to the conflict.

This is the first major delivery since October 2024 by UNICEF—or any other humanitarian agency—to reach Dilling. The convoy is continuing on to Kadugli, where children’s needs have been described as “catastrophic.”

According to UNICEF estimates, more than 63,000 children in South Kordofan suffer from acute malnutrition, including over 10,000 in critical condition with severe acute malnutrition. To help address this crisis, the convoy carried 6,300 cartons of ready-to-use therapeutic food, enough to cover local needs for more than six months. The shipment also included water and sanitation equipment such as pumps and generators to secure clean water, along with essential supplies for education and healthcare.

“This convoy is a lifeline for children in South Kordofan who have endured hunger, fear, and uncertainty for far too long,” said Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative in Sudan. “But one convoy is not enough. Without sustained humanitarian access, many children will simply not survive.”

Local communities in South Kordofan are facing a dire situation: more than 70% of water and sanitation facilities are out of service and in urgent need of repair, while months of heavy fighting have left families without food, medicine, or safe drinking water.

UNICEF has urged all parties to the conflict to guarantee safe, sustained, and unconditional access for humanitarian aid to every child in South Kordofan and across Sudan.
