Security Council: Rival Government Threatens Sudan’s Unity

The UN Security Council has rejected last month’s announcement by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to establish a rival administration in areas under its control, warning that the move threatens Sudan’s unity and risks escalating the ongoing conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Council members reaffirmed their support for Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging both sides to return to negotiations aimed at securing a permanent ceasefire and paving the way for an inclusive political transition leading to a civilian-led government and democratic elections.

The statement referenced Resolution 2736 (2024), which calls for lifting the RSF siege of El Fasher, where residents have faced the threat of famine since April 2024. It also voiced concern over renewed attacks there and in Kordofan, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties.

The Council called on all parties to allow unimpeded humanitarian access, protect civilians, and ensure accountability for grave violations, while urging UN member states to refrain from any external interference that could further inflame the conflict.

It also reiterated full support for UN envoy Ramtane Lamamra in his efforts to secure a peaceful settlement through dialogue with Sudanese parties and civil society.
