Senator Mark Warner, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, described the conflict in Sudan as a hidden humanitarian disaster. He said that more people are dying in Sudan every day than Gaza and Ukraine combined.
In an interview today on "GZERO World," Warner said that the brutal civil war in Sudan is a personal and political priority, describing the efforts of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump as a failure to act to end the war. He added that there has been no serious focus on the crisis.
The US senator considered that neither side in the war in Sudan deserves US support, saying, "Both sides are bad."
He said that President Trump has a unique opportunity to pressure Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to stop funding the violence. He added, "That would be a major political victory."
With US aid declining and global attention focused elsewhere, Warner warns that the price is not only moral but also geopolitical. "When we dont act, China fills the void—for a pittance," he said.
Washington is preparing to host a quadrilateral meeting at the end of July, which will include, alongside the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Arab Republic of Egypt. To discuss measures to end the war in Sudan, after it was postponed from it’s previously scheduled date of July 15.
