20,000 Displaced by Insecurity in Darfur, Western Sudan

The United Nations has warned that ongoing conflict, displacement, and disease outbreaks in Sudan are exacerbating humanitarian needs across the country, noting that more than 20,000 people have been displaced in Darfur, western Sudan.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, told a press conference that UN field partners reported that insecurity and intercommunal violence in the Darfur region have recently displaced more than 20,000 people, many of whom are in urgent need of support.

He added, "We reiterate our call on all parties to protect civilians and facilitate rapid, safe, unimpeded, and sustained humanitarian access," noting that cholera is spreading in Sudan, with more than 2,000 suspected cases and 170 deaths reported since last May, mostly concentrated in the Kordofan region.

The UN official affirmed that despite the challenges, the United Nations and its partners continue to intensify their cholera response efforts, supporting nearly 80 epidemiological surveillance sites, 16 treatment centers, and eight oral rehydration points, in addition to implementing preventive activities targeting more than 270,000 people in affected areas.

He also warned that funding shortfalls are limiting the scope of the response, urging donors to provide additional funding. He noted that the humanitarian appeal for Sudan this year has received approximately 40% of its required funding, with 1.1 billion received out of the 2.9 billion needed.
