WHO Calls for Immediate Halt to Attacks on Health Facilities in Sudan

Moatinoon - Agencies
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for an immediate stop to attacks targeting health facilities in Sudan, noting that five such attacks have been recorded since the beginning of this year, resulting in 69 deaths and 49 injuries.

In a post published today on the social media platform X, Ghebreyesus stated:
“During the first 50 days of 2026, five attacks on health care facilities in Sudan were documented, killing 69 people and injuring 49.”

He added that the latest attack occurred on February 15, when Al-Mazmoum Hospital in Sennar State, southeastern Sudan, was targeted, killing three patients and injuring seven others, including a health worker.

Ghebreyesus urged the immediate cessation of all attacks on the health sector, stressing the need to protect health facilities, equipment, medical personnel, and patients.

He also emphasized that peace in Sudan is long overdue, as the conflict and its worsening humanitarian consequences continue.

On Monday, the Sudan Doctors Network announced that three people were killed and seven injured in what it described as a drone attack by the Rapid Support Forces on Al-Mazmoum Hospital in Sennar State.

In a statement, the non-governmental medical network said:
“The Rapid Support Forces carried out a drone strike on Al-Mazmoum Hospital in Sennar State on Sunday evening, killing three people and injuring seven others, including a member of the medical staff.”

On February 10, the World Health Organization warned that Sudan’s health system is once again under attack, after three health facilities in South Kordofan State were struck during the first week of the month.

The three Kordofan states have witnessed intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since October 2025.

Since April 2023, the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in fighting with the Sudanese army following disagreements over the integration of the military establishment. The conflict has triggered a famine considered among the worst globally, killed tens of thousands of Sudanese, and displaced about 13 million people.
