The United Kingdom has called on Sudanese authorities to make more substantial efforts to respond to the Office of the Prosecutors request for information on the whereabouts of Ahmad Harun, Omar al-Bashir, and Abdel Rahim Hussein.
The UK expressed concern over the escalation of violence within Sudan. In a briefing to the UN Security Council today, UK representative Colin McIntyre stated that the fighting has resulted in numerous civilian casualties and forced thousands to flee their homes in El Fasher.
McIntyre voiced his concern over the increasing reports of serious international crimes being committed in Darfur and other parts of Sudan, including the recruitment of child soldiers, conflict-related sexual violence, and violence targeting specific ethnic groups.
The United Kingdom welcomed the progress made by the ICC Prosecutor in advancing accountability and noted some signs of improved cooperation from Sudans governing authorities, including the issuance of visas, facilitating a field visit to Port Sudan, and cooperation on some priority assistance requests. It is crucial that this cooperation continues to improve.
The UK representative highlighted ongoing progress in the trial of former Janjaweed leader Abd al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, commending the participation of over 100 victims and witnesses in the trial. He emphasized the need for continued trials like these to ensure accountability and justice and to ensure that other individuals subject to ICC arrest warrants are brought to justice.
